Randy's acquired by Republic

In December, Randy’s was acquired by Republic Services.  We are now operating as Randy’s Sanitation, a Republic Services Company.  Our local team is excited that this transition offers the best of both worlds: we have the support and resources of a national organization with a family-owned history and culture.  We will continue to provide the same great service you have come to expect.  Our local customer service representatives are here to help.  If you have a question please give us a call at (763) 972-3335.

Metals are a favorite amongst those who try to create as little waste as possible. This is because all metals can be recycled infinitely. They can be safely recycled without altering their properties and damaging them. Metals are great products to use if you want to produce less waste and ensure your products can always be recycled.

Randy’s Environmental Services accepts aluminum and steel beverage cans, and aluminum and steel food cans in the curbside recycling bin.

When you recycle your used beverage cans, you will benefit the environment in the following ways:

  • You'll reduce your carbon footprint: According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, aluminum recycling prevents more than 90 million tons of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere each year.

  • You'll save energy: According to The Aluminum Association, recycling old cans into new uses 95 percent less energy and releases 95 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than creating entirely new cans.

  • You'll be recycling a sustainable metal: There is no limit as to how many times aluminum can be recycled!

  • Aluminum cans are 100 percent recyclable: Aluminum  cans are the most recyclable of all recyclable materials. Recycled aluminum cans will be back on the store shelf in 60 days!

TIP: Do not crush, smash or bend aluminum cans. Why? A reverse magnetic system is used to sort cans. When they are crushed or otherwise bent the system does not correctly sort. Just leave the empty can in it's full shape.

How Are Metals Recycled?

Once metals are collected and sorted based on their properties, they are shredded. This helps during the melting process so melting the metals takes up less energy. Thankfully, it takes much less energy to melt metals than it takes to produce them. Melting recycled metals can take as little as a few minutes, which is much shorter than the amount of time it takes to create the metal.

After the melting process is complete, the melted metals are purified. This step ensures the metal is free from contaminants and it is the highest quality possible. Finally, the metal is cooled and solidified into the shape it is needed for in its next life.

What to do with other metal items?

Ferrous scrap metals are typically very large, and can’t fit in your recycling bin or a standard recycling plant’s machines. These metals include car parts, household appliances, structural steel, and other large items. Although these items are completely recyclable, they should not go in your curbside bin. They must be recycled by specialized equipment. You can visit Hennepin County’s website to figure out where to recycle various items that are not allowed in your curbside bins: https://www.hennepin.us/green-disposal-guide/items
