What is ORGANIC RECYCLING?

(And, do we have to?)

We think it’s safe to say that a majority of us know we are supposed to recycle plastic, aluminum, glass and paper - or at least, we know we’re supposed to.  But what most people don’t know is that organic materials makes up close to 40% of our residential trash.  This includes things like food scraps, non-recyclable paper napkins, egg cartons and pizza boxes from delivery.

For too long, the only options were to throw food scraps away or start your own compost pile.  And let’s be real, for most of us, composting doesn’t exactly fit into our daily routines.  That’s why Randy’s Environmental Services now offers the Blue Bag Organics recycling program.  It’s a done-for-you curbside composting service that takes the hassle (and the ickiness) out of the process.

On the save-the-planet scale, this one’s a no-brainer.  Organic landfill waste that could otherwise be composted is crushed under mountains of junk and decomposes slowly without air.  Two by-products of this anaerobic (airless) process are methane - a greenhouse gas - and nitrogen-heavy ammonia.

The Blue Bag Organics recycling program diverts organic waste from the landfill, reducing all of the above, and transforms it into something not only usable but essential

So, how does it work?

Simply put your recyclable, organic materials in the provided BPI-certified blue bag.  When full, toss the bag in your regular trash bin for weekly pick-up.  That’s it! Bags are sorted at processing plants, and turn the recyclable organics into premium compost.

What’s even better is that more items are accepted in this program than a typical backyard compost pile.  This is due to the large-scale compost facilities that reach higher temperatures, killing bacteria and breaking down items like meat, bones and dairy products.

Here are some examples of Blue Bag Organics accepted items:

  • Spoiled leftovers
  • Meat and bones
  • Vegetable & fruit scraps
  • Eggs & nut shells
  • Coffee grounds & filters
  • Tea leaves and tea bags (no staples)
  • Dairy products
  • Paper towels and napkins
  • Pizza boxes
  • BPI-certified products

If you have any questions about recycling or would like to sign up, please contact us.

The program is $69.95/year which covers operational costs and includes the BPI-certified bags (delivered to you).  New sign-ups get 50% off your first year, and a FREE bag of premium compost in the spring! (Great for potted plants and gardens.)
